Don’t cancel old credit cards – Instead of closing old credit card accounts, it may be better to just continue using them to take advantage of the credit history, but control the kind of spending you’re doing on it. Closing the account will not make much of a positive difference. Some people have the misconception that closing the accounts will help, but in reality it really doesn’t make much of a positive impact.

5. Schedule your search for a mortgage over a short period of time – Constantly applying for mortgages will definitely have a negative effect on your credit score because lenders will access your credit details. It’s best to only focus on a number of lenders over a short period of time rather than sporadically applying for a loan and taking a hit on your credit score.

6. Don’t open new credit accounts if you don’t really have a need for them – There’s a prevalent misconception that the more credit accounts you have, the better it will be for your credit score. The truth is that it’s better to maintain your current credit accounts rather than open up new ones and risk running up bad debts.
